Northern Floorball League

The Northern Floorball League has again expanded for the coming season with two news teams joining the league, however last seasons champions - Glenrothes - have had to pull out due to a combination of circumstances.  They intend to come back in season 2008/9 though as they take time to recruit more players.  Aberdeen Oilers - who participated in the Nationals and Spring Cup in 2007 - are joined by the new team from Central Scotland - Forth Phoenix. Forth will comprise a few players who played for Balwearie Thunder last season and some of whom are returning the sport to the Boness area from whence they came.

So the full list of teams for season 2007/8 are:

Chapel, Dundee Northern Lights, Balwearie Thunder, Hawick, RBS Linlithgow, Balwearie Lightning, Aberdeen Oilers, and Forth Phoenix.

Hawick win - Christmas Cup in Glenrothes

Hawick - boosted by some Glenrothes floorballers - beat shock finalists Balwearie Thunder 6-2 in the Final of the 2007 Xmas Cup. Shock results of the day were RBS Linlithgow beating Dundee Northern Lights 2-1 in the quarter finals and Balwearie Thunder gaining a first ever win (4-3) against Chapel.

Full results can be seen below next to the league fixtures.

The fixture list for the coming season proved to be quite challenging to sort out using two venues and keeping Dundee at home.  Some teams have to play back to back games but breaks have been scheduled to make that easier for the teams in question.  Three of the league committee spent a bit of time and came up with the following:

LEAGUE CUP 27th APRIL (FIPRE)

25th MAY MIXED FIVES (FIPRE)

Spring Cup

Chapel beat both Balwearie teams to win the Spring Cup.  League winners Glenrothes had a bad day losing for the first time to a Balwearie team - Thunder in the semi-final and then losing to Balwearie Lightning in the 3rd/4th play-off.   Aberdeen Oilers travelled south for a few friendlies and appear a useful addition to the league.

Nationals 2007 Sponsor - Wishart International

  • "We as a company became involved with Floorball this year through our sponsorship of the Glenrothes Grrrowl  Floorball Club and I personally have started to take a keen interest  in the sport. I am highly impressed with the commitment shown by those involved with the sport locally and can only see it going from strength  to strength in the future. We are therefore delighted to sponsor the GBFF National Championships 2007, and expect it to be a marvelous  event. I'd like to wish all the teams involved the very best of luck."

Glenrothes received the Northern League trophy at T7 in Dundee on sunday 25th March.   Chapel finished the league strongly with three wins to finish within 2 points of Glenrothes.   The key result for Chapel was the 2-2 draw with Dundee in an earlier round. Dundee beat Balwearie Thunder 4-3, coming back from 0-2 and 2-3 to finish strongly.  Thunder finished the league with two convincing wins against Hawick and Linlithgow. Linlithgow suffered two defeats but came out on top again against the league’s bottom team Balwearie Lightning.  Lightning finished on a high with a 6-6 draw with Hawick. Hawick are to be congratulated on travelling again with just 5 players and a goalkeeper.  Their fitness level and dedication is superb. Hopefully they can build on this for next season.
